Outlaw Ocean Series Race 6 Barwon Heads

Gfglogo2_600x94

Date:

March 28th Sunday

Where:

At the Barwon Heads little jetty just up-river from the Barwon Heads bridge (1km) on Ozone Road which runs off Hitchcock Av

here will be both long course (14km) and short course (7km) events

.

The long course race will be 14km starting and finishing opposite the Little Jetty. The course will travel out into the ocean, along the coast towards Ocean Grove and back into the river. It may involve a couple of laps. Exact course details TBA, but will also depend on the conditions on the day.

This race is also a perfect opportunity for paddlers less comfortable with the surf to compete, as the short course event can be held within the protection of the Barwon Heads River rather than going out into strong winds or large swells (if these happen to be the conditions on the day).

So, to all of those paddlers new to ocean paddling or multisport or river paddlers who are not comfortable in windier conditions or larger surf, this is your perfect chance to get out there and have a crack in the world's fastest growing paddling discipline. It's bloody good fun and some fantastic scenery to be seen.

Also, to all you clubbies, your season will have just finished to come and have a crack in an ocean race. It's only an hour and, if we get enough spec ski paddlers, we have a separate event for you guys and girls. All of your northern and western clubby rivals regularly do these races in their respective states.

Junior ski, SUP and paddleboard course: This will be a river race starting at the Barwon Heads little jetty, heading under the Barwon Heads bridge, then out and around the far ocean marker. The race finishes back at the Barwon Heads little jetty.

February 13-14 WaveChaser Series Races (Northern California)

February 13-14 is the annual WaveChaser double header weekend with races on both Saturday and Sunday. Our doubleheader weekend always offers the most competitive races of the Series. Our Sunday event will be staged from Fort Baker in Sausalito just as it has been in past years. A change for this
year is that the Saturday event will be staged from just up the road at Sea Trek Kayak.

Driving directions to Sea Trek:
http://www.seatrek.com/pages/directions/directionstost.htm

Driving directions to Fort Baker: http://tinyurl.com/25sqmo

SATURDAY

9:00 Novice Course 2 miles a quick out and back
10:00 Short course 6 miles to Point Belvedere and back
11:30 Long Course 10 miles around Angle Island

SUNDAY

9:30 Short Course 6 miles to Point Belvedere and back
11:00 Long Course 10 miles out the Golden Gate, up the coast, and back

In general, the novice race will be in flat conditions, the short course races will be in moderate conditions, and the long course races will be in moderate to rough conditions. The Sunday long course (out the Golden Gate and up the coast) will be especially challenging. This course takes paddlers through the edge of the "Potato Patch" off of Point Bonita. Only strong paddlers with rough water experience should enter the Sunday long course.

Lunch will be served and awards will be handed out after each day's races.  As has been customary for our doubleheader weekend, we'll have overall awards for the best combined long course times for the two days of races. The overall awards will be given out to the fastest long course male and female surfski, the fastest long course male and female OC1, and the fastest male and female "waterman". The waterman award is for racers who paddle long course surfski one day and long course OC1 one day.

We have raffle prizes to hand out this weekend. The current list of raffle items includes:

Items donated by Huki
Items donated by Ocean Paddle Sports
Gift cards for Subway, Starbucks, Baha Fresh, and iTunes

Outrigger Canoeing Books

We have been working hard to reduce production and overseas freight costs of two of our most popular publications:

THE ART AND SKILL OF STEERING AN OUTRIGGER CANOE (168pages)
THE PADDLERS GUIDE TO OUTRIGGER CANOEING (426pages)

Our single biggest expense (and yours) has been the cost of shipping.
We want our readers to be able to buy without excessive freight charges. We want paddlers in South America, Guam, Saipan, Italy and other areas to be able to afford our books.

75% of our books find their way to the USA, Canada and the Pacific Islands. It's therefore essential to us to ensure we make our books as affordable as possible for readers in these regions, while also reducing costs for readers in areas such as Europe, where the sport has great potential for growth.

This has been achieved by a number of factors:
  • Reduced postal fees from the United Kingdom
  • Redesigned and improved layout
  • Printing of internal pages in black and white
  • High quality digital printing not lithographic.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS: We've taken environmental factors into consideration in the production of this new book, opting for 'Digital Printing', the future for environmentally conscious book manufacture. This process eliminates the need for lithographic plates and chemical usage and reduces waste disposal. We have also opted to use paper guaranteed to be grown under the guidance of the 'Forestry Stewardship Council' (FSC) who ensure the use of legal, sustainable, plantation timbers. Our choosen printers are at the top of the field in enviromentally sound print production.

The Power of Forgiveness

SCRIPTURE

"Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come close to me." When they had done so, he said, "I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will not be plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt." (Genesis 45:4-7)

"Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." (Luke 18:27)

OBSERVATION

In some of the most challenging times in life, God is still with you. In earlier readings, the story of Joseph is an incredible series of events that takes place in a young Hebrews life and his trust in God carries him into the unimaginable. (Genesis 39:2,5,20-23 &41:16) Hated by his brothers because of a dream that he had being over them, they throw him into a cistern, then sell him to a band of Ishmaelite's. Taken down to Egypt, Joseph is now sold to an Egyptian official name Potiphar. Potiphar's wife find Joseph quite attractive and seduces him, but after Joseph refuses, she falsely accuses him of attacking her. Thrown in prison, with the help of God, Joseph is able to discern dreams. He later ends up discerning a dream from the Pharaoh which eventually gets Joseph out of prison. In each of these situations, those that are next to Joseph can clearly see the Lords hand on his life. By this time the Pharaoh puts Joseph in charge of administrating his kingdom and the land of Egypt. Through all of these weird and challenging situations, Joseph stays close to God and somehow knows that whatever happens in his life, as long as he has God, that's all he ever needs - no matter how dark and discouraging the situation may appear - Joseph trusts in God. Joseph has every reason to return the favor for what his brother did to him. But instead, what happens is one of the most incredible examples of forgiveness. When you are that close to God, you become like God, and you do the same as what God would have done for you and anyone else seeking God for forgiveness.

APPLICATION

The example of Joseph shows me the incredible heart of the Father. Jesus is not concerned about who's right or who's wrong, just as long the relationship can be mended, put back together. The Greek word is "Kartartidzo" (to mend) - means for the equipping of the saints (Ephesians 4:12). To mend what was once broken. Only through Jesus can such forgiveness can be possible (Luke 18:27). Even Joseph understands the significance of why this all had to happen. It was for God's Glory that he was eventually sold into Egypt, but later as it all comes together, this all had to happen, to save the lives of many. The lesson here is somebody has to be Jesus, to suffer and to Kartartidzo a relationship. And it might as well be you! At times when forgiveness is the furthest from our heart, somebody has to be Jesus in an impossible situation, and it might as well be you. Be Jesus to someone today.

PRAYER

Thank you Lord for the life examples of our Lord Jesus and the power of forgiveness. May I be all that Jesus can be in me today. Amen.

SoCal Racing Junior Series Updates!

THE EPIC/VALHALLA JUNIOR SURFSKI WINTER RACE SERIES IS GETTING COMPETETIVE!!!!
After just 3 races the Junior Surf ski Winter Race series is really getting competitive with the Boys and Girls battling it out on the water.

The first race of the series saw surf conditions at the start at La Jolla Shores Race, but all the kids made out through the breakers and made it back to ride the waves into the beach. The following week it was up the coast to Oceanside and despite the cold offshore breeze a large field of 19 and under paddlers headed out through the harbor and back. Last Saturday, the Tecolote 5000m race provided sunny skies and flat water to give the kids a chance to test their raw speed and tactics turning the island and buoys.

In the EPIC KAYAKS boys standings 15 year old Sean Barlow is at the top of the table with 167 points, he won overall at Oceanside and picked up a couple of 2nd place finishes at La Jolla and Tecolote. However, being the son of Epic Expert Chris Barlow, Sean does not qualify to win the EPIC V10 surf ski that is up for grabs for the top point scorer. So, the EPIC V10 is in the sights of Michael Holmes, Garen Doyle, Michael Lowe, Ryan Stock and Kevin Stock (Kevin had an awesome paddle at Tecolote, beating Sean and Junior World Team member Nick Hanoian). However, with 6 races still remaining in the series there is still a chance for someone else to come up in the standings, especially with Newport Aquatic Center paddlers and racers from Mexico getting in on the action.

The VALHALLA SURFSKIS girls rankings is also hotly contested with Katarina La Juenesse streaking to the top of the table with 162 points, she is followed by Sydney Bohlman with 153 points who just pulled ahead of her older sister Lexie who was last years EPIC KAYAKS overall winner of a V10L Surf ski. The next race in the series is Santa Barbara on January 9th, 2010.
