Moving From Knowing To Following

SCRIPTURE

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (John 13:12-17)

OBSERVATION

There is something of new insight I've gained here today about student teacher relationship. It is so simple yet so profound yet not easy! Now Jesus is taking time to prepare the disciples for His death and resurrection. Jesus is saying and doing many things that are profound that fulfill prophecy spoken from the beginning of time, though true many of these things Jesus is saying and doing the disciples did not understand at the time. One of them being, Jesus takes time to wash His disciples feet. The teacher takes a lowly place and humbles himself to the point of this servant act. Jesus explains… That if these are students of Jesus who is the teacher then students will take what Jesus teaches and apply it, or do it right? Simple! He makes the point that though He did this type of servant act yet the student is not greater than the teacher. If Jesus never did or taught, then His followers would have nothing to teach or reproduce.

APPLICATION

Jesus said to any who follow Him "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." Jesus concludes this snippet lesson on student teacher relationship by saying "Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them." The blessing comes not just hearing these things but understanding them and actually reproducing them. This is the litmus test of a true follower of Christ. Not just reproducing the great feats of Christ also the lowly acts of service. Jesus has set a perfect example for me to follow, therefore I am encouraged this morning to stick close to Christ, in order to follow His lead not my own or any one else.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, I pray for a renewed heart of a student this morning, I pray for eyes to see what You've done and what You are doing, that I may go from just knowing Your example to following Your example. Amen.

Lifestart Kayak for Kids 2010: the rise of a "Classic"!

After a successful second event in March 2009, Lifestart - in partnership with AROC Sport - is putting on the third edition of Kayak for Kids, its annual fundraising paddling event on Sydney Harbour on Sunday 28 March 2010. This event has been dubbed the "City2Surf on water" and can be completed by paddlers bringing their own boat or by teams relaying the distance on 3-persons sit-on-tops. It is particularly appropriate for corporations looking for team-building and a good cause, but families, groups of friends and sports teams are sure to have a blast as well. Shelley Oates-Wilding, former Olympic paddling champion is the event ambassador and will be paddling with her son Kai on the day.
